Embrace your weird side

embrace-your-weird-sideIt has been a couple years since I have gone to a Vinyasa yoga class. Yesterday I took the plunge and went to a studio nearby (East Wind Yoga) to get some time to myself. Pretty sure Vinyasa is as close to Heaven as I can get. I could feel my heart filling with the love and joy that this practice brought me years ago. My favorite part about Vinyasa is the little bits of wisdom that the instructors tend to share at the beginning and end of class. They tie moves to it and the whole class is like a dance for your soul. Ok getting “woohooy” over here. The instructor (Natasha Bailey) said something that hasn’t left my mind so I figure I should write about it!

The thought: Embrace your weird side.

When we are kids we are taught to do things this way and that way so that we are seen as “good” and not “bad”.We are taught to fit in and follow the rules. This follows us through high school and college and transcends into the workplace.

We all become these stereotypes and think that this is the way life should be lived. Maybe we show our true colors to our spouse? best friend? family? These characteristics are what have cultivated deeper connections and deeper relationship with others but it takes months sometimes years before we show them.

Being different has such a negative connotation tied to it but what isn’t realized is those that show their “weirdness” are extremely successful. When I say successful I mean in life, in love, and maybe even financially. It is like letting your uniqueness come out opens space up in your mind for creativity and success.

Part of my job is studying people, studying the top earners in my company and what they do…what have I found? THEY ARE ALL WEIRDOS!!!! They are all silly and funny and don’t care who knows it! They share love and sadness and they are REAL.

So I guess my point to this is to take pride in your weirdness. Life is to short to hide in a stereotype, be weird, embrace it and encourage others to do the same.

My daughter will be different

You are a woman so you will struggle with your weight your entire life…This concept was driven into my brain from a young age. I watched TV shows that showed woman constantly trying to lose 5lbs or trying some crazy diet to get “skinny” for their date or what have you. I watched my own mother try diet after diet and fluctuant in weight her whole life. As I got into my teens I participated in diets and workouts with my friends and family members because as a woman this is what you do. I struggled. I toyed with every eating disorder throughout high school but wasn’t convinced they worked.  I did juice and tea cleanses, spent hours at the gym, drank nothing but coffee and ate one meal a day for a long time.

Because I didn’t know anything different. Because this is all I had learned and all that society supported.

Until now. Now I know. At the age of 25 I finally have a healthy relationship with food, my body and exercise. I have found balance. I did the research and I put in the effort every single day and you know what? It freaking works. My lifestyle is so easy to maintain that I have no doubt in my mind that I will be doing this for the rest of my life.

Because of my lifestyle I know my daughter will be different. She isn’t going to grow up seeing her mom struggle. She won’t hear me say I am having a “cheat meal” or that I am going to “give in” to bad food because that is not a game I play. She will see my consistency and know THAT is the way to success. She will see me workout every single day and eat healthy every single day. She will know that just because others choose to struggle it doesn’t mean she has to. She will have the answer to weight maintenance in front of her every single day.

This is the reason I stick with it, this is what pushes me on days I “just don’t feel like it”. She is the reason and her future is what drives me.

My Whole30 Must-Haves

So I am on my 4th month of living the Whole30 lifestyle. I wanted to quickly share some of the items I use on a DAILY basis to keep me on track and never hungry.

#1 RX Bars

These bars are amazing! I literally buy them by the box and eat one everyday with my coffee. They are simple, fill me up and make me feel SO good!

#2 MCT Oil

Not only do I slip this stuff into everything my family consumes ( ok maybe not everything). I add it to my shakeology and or my coffee. The real key to whole30 is making sure you have good fats to keep up your energy and fuel your body.

It is funny because I have never been a HUGE salad fan but every since I started Whole30 I literally crave them almost everyday. I pre-make my salad in a giant bag on Sunday and eat it throughout the week. I never have an excuse to eat bad because there is always an option in the fridge.

#4 Coconut milk

Usually I use the canned ones but I forgot to grab them today and for the sake of sharing put this one in. I love coconut milk and coconut cream. It is great in coffee, shakes, soups, and a ton of other recipes.

#5 Coconut Aminos- Garlic Sauce and Liquid Aminos

These are sooooo good! If you need a little extra flavor in your meal and don’t want the added salt grab these!

#6 Kombucha

This is an absolute treat for me! I usually have Kombucha on a weekend night instead of an alcoholic beverage.

#7 Avocados

Gotta get them fats!! My daughter and I eat it every single day! I especially love it mid-afternoon when I want to grab a snack. Instead I grab an avocado, add sea salt, pepper and devour!

Items not pictured….

MEAT! I love chicken sausage, roasted chicken in the instant pot and some grass-fed beef for taco salads and such.

Grass-Fed Butter, Coconut Oil and Ghee-All day everyday…..I cook with all of them and incorporate them into every meal!

Steps to creating easy, simple, healthy baby food.

I feel like with all the latest products on the market now “homemade” baby food is seen as strenuous and extremely time consuming but in reality as long as you eat relatively healthy yourself making homemade baby food will save you money and keep your baby healthy and happy! All of my baby food concerns and answers on how to freeze or refrigerate items were found in this book

For the most part I followed these simple steps:

Step 1. Roast or Steam vegetables according to any recipe you find on the web. Depending on the type of vegetable the baking and steaming times differ. I usually just made extra of anything I was eating that day.

Step 2. Put cooked veggies in blender and add filtered water till you have a puréed consistansy.

Step 3. Put purée in one of the three items pictured below.

Food pouch-found on amazon
Silicone Freezer tray-can be found on amazon
Glass containers with plastic lids-bought at target. Safe for freezer and fridge
Use the book or the internet to find how long food can be stored in the fridge or freezer. Label storage container.

Fruit for the most part has to be cooked for little babes so I would throw pears, or apples in the crockpot with water AND NOTHING ELSE, on high for 4 hours. Throw in blender afterwards and serve or store. You don’t even have to peel the fruit.

I still to this day (my daughter is 1) don’t offer a ton of fruit to her. I would rather her get the same nutrients from the vegetables I feed her.

I had to do a silly about of research to find this simple way to make baby food so if this helps at least one mom I am happy 😁

The reason my husband and I don’t celebrate our Anniversary

Actually we don’t celebrate any type of gift exchanging holiday including our birthdays…

Sounds a little crazy to go against society norms but it has revolutionized our marriage. It’s not that my husband and I don’t ever get gifts for each other we just don’t do it when society tells us to. We do it all throughout the year and on our own time.

There is this insane pressure when it comes to gift exchanging holidays, what are you going to get him/her? when are you going to do it? what is she/he getting you?  Is your gift going to be more thoughtful? more expensive? more exciting?

We both love getting things for one another but we do it on a random trip to target or a Saturday at the mall. We remember the little things on each others list and choose to recognize them throughout the year.

We also don’t like to base our life or our daughter’s life around objects. We don’t want her to grow up seeing that objects are the only way to show love to your spouse.

You guys, the relief is incredible.

The pressure that it has taken off my husband has made us so much happier, he use to get frustrated because he never had the time or energy to shop. It is so freeing to stop having expectations for one another. This was very hard for me because being a woman I always thought a man should bring you flowers and chocolates and surprise you with trips to the beach….BLAH BLAH BLAH! Instead of appreciating all the great things my husband does for me on a daily basis I would focus in on this one thing….flowers. He NEEDS to get them for me…thats what men are SUPPOSE to do. Here is the thing though, my husband works long hours and 5-7 days a week. One night it finally hit me, after arguing for a bit about how he is never romantic with me he said ” I don’t want to stop for flowers, I want to come home and spend as much time with you as I can before I have to go off to work again”.

That is romance, that is genuine and authentic love, that is WAY better than flowers.

I write this on the day of our three year wedding anniversary, so happy to wake up, give him a kiss and wish him a great day knowing that there will be no flowers or chocolates but there will be lots of love and laughter when he comes home.

A Mommy Mentor?

My amazing neighbor that helped me survive motherhood.

I think when you get pregnant you should be assigned a Mommy Mentor.

She tells you what to freak out over and what is normal. She shows you what you will actually need when you have a baby and what will just sit in the closet. Why is it that we are all having to find answers on blogs, social media and websites in order to find answers that other moms could answer in seconds?

It is so much harder to find women that will support and encourage us instead of judging and shunning us these days. I was lucky enough to have neighbors and a couple friends reach out to me during the first couple weeks after having Ellie. It doesn’t matter how many episodes you watch of “bringing home baby” on TLC, it is NOT the same. Thankfully these women were all a text or phone call away from answers I needed to calm my anxiety.

As I am meeting more and more moms I am finding this was not the norm. I would have lost my freaking mind if I didn’t have these women. They were so supportive and encouraged me to be vulnerable and ask questions and CRY WHENEVER AND HOWEVER I WANTED TO!

Anyways….I have a point. We all can be mommy mentors. We can all choose to support one another no matter what beliefs, opinion or politics we believe in. YOU have to be the one to take the first step, don’t wait for moms to come to you with questions. Make it a priority to reach out to new moms even if its just to listen to them vent. We all know talking to our husbands/ loverssssss is not the same.

We all know how crazy motherhood makes you so lets talk about it! How do you do this in a non-awkward way?

There isn’t one, just do it! Imagine how great it would have been to have the support when you were a new mommy and OFFER IT! I make it a point to message any new mom I see on Facebook, I don’t care if we haven’t talked in 10 years or ever, I always make it a point to be there for them if they need it. I am not an expert AT ALL but I sure as hell know what crazy feels like and its always better to be crazy together 🙂

Coach Thoughts

Thoughts on Emotional Eating

I was talking with one of my favorite clients and she was telling me about the actions she is taking in her life to better herself (LOVE IT). We were talking about how she wants to take control of her emotional eating. She did something that blew me away!

She found the CAUSE of the emotions and cut that person, place or job out of her life.

Think about it, instead of trying to take control of your emotions, take control of the situation that is causing these emotions. BAM! EMOTIONAL EATING GONE!

I call it life cleansing. Find what is causing you anger, hurt, frustration and fix it.

Have a friend that always brings you down? Either confront him/her on the negativity and try and help or distance yourself. I know many people would find this selfish but you need to CARE FOR YOURSELF BEFORE YOU CAN CARE FOR OTHERS. You will become a better friend, wife, and mom if you focus in on you and what makes you happy.

It takes time to retrain your brain to not run to food every time you feel sad, hurt or angry. If you can prevent those emotions as much as possible then you are limiting the amount of times you have the opportunity to turn to food for comfort.

Now I understand that we can’t all just go out and quit our jobs (what I find to be the top cause of emotional eating) however we can shift our thinking a bit. Break down your job and find the things you DO enjoy, maybe it’s coffee breaks with a coworker or talking on the phone with a certain client. FIND POSITIVITY IN THE THINGS YOU CANNOT CHANGE.

I remember when I would be driving home from my job as a daycare worker I would think about how exhausted I was and how frustrating X,Y, and Z was today, how behind I am on X, Y and Z. Blah Blah Blah. So by the time I got home I wanted to sit on the couch and be a stressed out mess while I watched TV and ate pasta.

Now if I would have known about the power of positive thinking and how the state of our mind drives our day to day life I could have saved about 15lbs of extra weight I gained doing this.

What could I have done instead?

I loved my job, I truly did, I loved every single one of the two-year-olds in my class. I loved prepping for activities I wanted to do with them, I loved talking to them and teaching their little minds about life. The problem is I never reminded myself of this, I focused on the daily frustrations instead of the whole picture.

I practice this on a daily basis and rarely find myself turning to food for comfort. I use my mind and thoughts to comfort me.

Bottom line…If you can’t cut it out then change the way you feel about it.

whole30, Whole30 Recipes

My Favorite Mom-Friendly Whole30 Recipes

Ok so when I say mom-friendly, I mean throw it in a pot and let the magic happen without you having to do much. Most of the recipes that I have chosen can also be ready in about 30 minutes or thrown in a crockpot.  I don’t know about you but no matter how hard I try sometimes I don’t even think about dinner till 6:00pm (husband gets home at 6:45pm). So sometimes that means last minute trips to the grocery store or using what I have.

Ok first up, Beef and Veggie Chili!

I keep the ingredients for this chili in my house at all times! It is filling, spicy and satisfying! I got this recipe  from http://www.paleonewbie.com/paleo-crockpot-chili-recipe/

(1) 14-ounce jar or can of diced tomatoes

ADD all the above vegetables and spices (except garnish ingredients) to the slow-cooker and stir to combine.SET slow cooker to LOW, cover, and slow cook for about 6 hours.
SPOON into individual bowls. Garnish with crumbled bacon and avocado slices if desired

Next up, burgers!

These are so freaking good, they are easy and my husband thinks I am fancy when I make them. 🙂 I always add the egg on top, it sounds weird but it is sooooo good! This burger fills you up without any added carbs. (There are sweet potato fries in the background but they are never necessary lol!)

zest and juice of one lime
2 Tablespoon chopped cilantro
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
pico de gallo
poached egg (optional)

Place pan on medium heat.
Add olive oil to bottom of pan.

When pan is hot, place patties in pan and cook for about 5 minutes each side. Top with guacamole, pico de gallo and egg if desired!

Fitness Journey

My body loving, weight losing, sweat dripping, salad eating journey….

BOOM! TEN MONTHS and ONE WEEK PREGNANT. Yeah people its 10 months….a pregnancy is 40 weeks…4 weeks in a month….you can do the math. Well I was 41 weeks pregnant here weighing almost 200lbs.

I have always struggled with my body image ( show me a girl that hasn’t), but pregnancy took it to a new level. I was able to stay active until I was 7 months pregnant and my body told me to slow down. Nothing significant happened, just started getting dizzy if I did too much. So the pounds packed on. I ate healthy, never had any real cravings but the time and no exercise took a toll on my body.

After Ellie came into the world I was in shock. I packed pajamas for after birth and they didn’t fit…everyone told me after the baby comes out you will shrink down!! LIES! I was wearing maternity clothes till I was four months postpartum. When I was pregnant I told myself I would be back to my pre-preganacy weight after three months. HAHAHAA! SILLY NOT-A- MOM-YET LAUREN.

Alright this is me four months postpartum. I was 153lbs, I started doing PIYO ( a yoga and pilates combination workout from beachbody) about three times a week. My nutrition was about 60/40, 60% good food, 40% bad. I for sure eat my feelings so feeling depressed and overwhelmed as a new mom I took comfort in bad food.

Alright fast forward to August 2016, I lost about 15 pounds with a few months of PIYO and really cleaned up my eating. I wasn’t getting the results I wanted though. The top pictures were before I committed 100% to shakeology and a workout program. I bought 21 day fix extreme and 30 days of shakeology. I was a skeptic. All these years I had been killing myself at the gym and you are telling me that a shake could have helped me? NO WAY. I just wanted to mark this off on the list of “things lauren has tried to lose weight”. Well…it worked….not only did I lose 6 lbs and 11 inches but I felt amazing( bottom pics, sorry for the tan lines). I had so much more energy and absolutely no cravings. It was a life I never thought was possible. What really sealed the deal? My husband telling me that I ” look really good and seem so much happier”.  You know what? I was happier, I did look really good! I was so proud of my body! My clothes were actually getting loose….what an incredible feeling!

So here I am now…(don’t mind the crazy pirate face, I am a lil weird) as they say I have “drank the beachbody koolaid” and there is no going back. My only regret? I wish I would have found this sooner, I wish I would have known that I have the discipline and ability to get the confidence and now career I have always dreamed of. I get to inspire people on a daily basis, I get to tell them that they are worth every drip of sweat! Every salad eaten! Every inch loss!!

Thank you for letting me share my journey. If you want to make a change please e-mail me! Want just some motivation everyday? I will text you! I just want people to be happy. We have this one life, we owe it to ourselves to completely rock it! Want to make this a career? Join my team!
